How to get more Instagram followers without paying
We sell followers, but the followers that matter most are free. These are the habits that bring in more real followers over time, in roughly the order we’d tackle them.
Fix the profile first, post on a rhythm you can keep, make reels people want to send to a friend, collaborate with accounts near your size, and show up locally. It’s slow, but it compounds.
1. Make the profile convert
Every route to new followers ends at your profile. A clear photo, a name field that includes what you do (it’s searchable), a bio that says who you help and how, and one obvious link. Our bio guide goes line by line.
2. Pick a rhythm you can keep
Posting three times a week for twelve months will outdo a fortnight of daily posts. Consistency matters because each post is another chance to be recommended. Use the growth planner to see what steady weekly gains add up to.
3. Reels for reach, carousels for depth
Reels are where non-followers find you. Carousels get saved and give people a reason to follow for more. Mixing the two works for most accounts; this comparison has the detail.
4. Collaborate
A collab post sits on both profiles at once and reaches both follower lists. Pick partners slightly larger than you with an overlapping audience: a florist and a wedding photographer, a café and a local bakery.
5. Be findable locally
Add a location tag and a couple of precise local hashtags, and nudge customers to tag you. Our guide to growing a local account is written for UK towns and cities.
6. Reply to everything
Comments and DMs build relationships, and replies count as engagement. Answering within the first hour after posting is a good habit.
7. Post when your followers are around
Insights (on professional accounts) shows when your followers are most active. Our article on the best time to post in the UK explains how to use it.
8. Avoid shortcuts that backfire
Follow/unfollow tools, engagement pods and giveaways with no connection to your niche all attract followers who leave or never engage. They also carry more account risk than a single bought package.
And if you want a head start
A small follower package keeps a fresh profile from looking deserted while you work through the list above. That’s all it does, and we’re upfront about it. See the packages.
