Instagram Reels vs carousels: which should you post?

Both formats can grow an account, but they do different jobs. Reels are built for reaching new people; carousels are built for depth and saves. Most accounts do best with both.

What Reels are good at

Reels are short vertical videos, now up to three minutes long, and they are the main route by which Instagram surfaces your work to non-followers, through the Reels tab and Explore. Instagram has said that watch time and shares are especially important signals for them. That makes Reels the format for discovery.

Good Reels hook immediately, stay on one idea, and give people a reason to send them on: something funny, useful or very specific to a group of people.

What carousels are good at

Carousels hold up to 20 photos or videos in one post. People swipe through at their own pace, which suits explanations, step-by-step guides, before-and-afters and product ranges. They tend to get saved, and Instagram may show a carousel again to someone who scrolled past it, starting on a different slide, which gives it a second chance.

A weekly mix that works for most small accounts

  • Two reels aimed at new people: one tip or behind-the-scenes, one that shows the result of what you do.
  • One carousel aimed at people who already follow you: a guide, a list, a story in slides.
  • Stories most days to stay in front of existing followers and answer questions.

Adjust after a month based on Insights. If your reels reach far but nobody follows, your profile may not be converting; if carousels get saves but little reach, try turning one into a reel.

Can one idea be both?

Yes, and it’s the most efficient way to work. Film a short reel of a process, then post the key steps as a carousel a few days later. Different people see each, and those who see both get the full picture.

Avoid the common mistakes

Slow intros on reels, carousels where the first slide doesn’t say why to swipe, and reposting videos with another app’s watermark, which Instagram has said it may show less. Original content does better.
