Instagram engagement rate calculator

Calculate engagement against followers and, with Insights data, against reach. Nothing is saved or uploaded; it all runs on your device.

Adds a rate based on people who actually saw the post.

How the calculation works

The calculator adds your average likes and comments per post, divides by your follower count and multiplies by 100. If you add average reach from Insights, it also shows the rate among people who actually saw the post, which is fairer for accounts whose followers aren’t all active.

To get averages, take your last ten feed posts (not counting any that were promoted), add up the likes, add up the comments, and divide each total by ten.

Reading the result

Instagram doesn’t publish official benchmarks, and rates vary a lot with niche and account size: smaller accounts usually see higher percentages. The most useful comparison is with yourself. If your rate is falling month on month while followers rise, new followers aren’t engaging. If it’s rising, your content is landing.

The bands the calculator uses are rough guides, not industry figures. Use them to decide where to look, not to judge yourself.

Improving it

Ask specific questions in captions (examples here), reply to every comment, and post formats that suit your audience; see Reels vs carousels. If you’ve bought followers, expect the per-follower rate to dip; rate by reach is the better measure then.

If a few posts need to look better received, likes start at £1.89.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
There’s no official figure. It depends heavily on account size and niche, with smaller accounts usually higher. Compare against your own past posts first.
Should I count video views?
Not in this calculator. It uses likes and comments, which are comparable across posts. Views are better compared reel against reel.
Do you save the numbers I enter?
No. Everything is worked out on your device; the figures never reach our server.
