Instagram hashtags in 2026: what still works

Once, hashtags were how most people got discovered on Instagram. They matter less than they did, but used well they still help Instagram understand what your post is about.

What hashtags do now

Instagram has said for some time that hashtags are mainly a way of categorising content, not a shortcut to reach. Today, most discovery comes from recommendations in Reels and Explore, and from search, which reads your caption, your on-screen text and your name field as well as your tags. Hashtags are one input among several.

How many to use

Instagram historically allowed up to 30 per post but has been moving towards far fewer, and its own advice for some time has been a handful of relevant tags. Check what the app currently allows when you post, and plan for three to five specific hashtags. Stuffing a post with dozens of generic tags looks spammy and adds nothing.

Specific beats popular

Tags with tens of millions of posts, like #love or #instagood, are too broad to tell Instagram anything useful. Specific tags describe the post and the audience:

Too broadMore useful
#food#manchesterbrunch
#wedding#cotswoldswedding
#fitness#beginnerrunninguk
#art#linocutprint
#smallbusiness#leedsmakers

A simple formula

  • One tag for what the post is (#sourdoughloaf).
  • One for where (#brightonfood).
  • One for the community (#homebakersuk).
  • Optionally, one branded tag that customers can use too.

Write captions for search

Because Instagram search reads captions, write a first line that plainly says what the post is: “Three easy sourdough mistakes (and how to fix them)” is easier to find than “Sunday vibes 🍞”. Add the key words to on-screen text on reels too.

Habits to drop

  • Copying the same block of 30 tags onto every post.
  • Hiding tags in a first comment out of habit; put the few you use in the caption.
  • Banned or spam-associated tags, which can stop a post appearing under hashtags. If a tag shows only top posts or nothing at all, avoid it.
  • Trending tags unrelated to what the post shows.

Our caption formatter counts your hashtags and characters before you post, and keeps your line breaks intact.
