Buying likes on Instagram: what actually happens

Likes are the cheapest thing you can buy for Instagram and the most misunderstood. Here is what changes on the post, what doesn’t, and when it’s worth a couple of pounds.

Short answer

Bought likes raise the like count on one post. They make the post look better received to anyone who sees it, but they don’t make people watch, share or comment, which Instagram weighs heavily. Use them for a few posts that matter, not as a growth plan.

What happens, step by step

You choose a post and a number of likes, and pay. Shortly afterwards the like count on that post starts to climb, usually in small steps over minutes to hours. The accounts that liked it appear in the likes list like any others. Nothing changes about your profile, your followers or your other posts.

Do bought likes help reach?

Less than people hope. Instagram’s ranking looks at many signals, and the company has been open that shares (people sending a post to friends), watch time on reels and saves are especially important, particularly for showing content to people who don’t already follow you. A higher like count may help a post look worth stopping for, which can nudge real engagement, but it isn’t a reliable lever on its own.

Where it genuinely helps

  • Pinned posts. The three posts at the top of your grid do a lot of the persuading.
  • Launches and announcements. A new product or event post that will be shared around.
  • Collab posts. When two accounts share one post, a healthy like count reflects well on both.
  • Fixing imbalance. Where a profile’s follower count is well ahead of its post engagement.

Where it’s a waste

On a post nobody would care about anyway, on every post forever (it gets expensive and changes nothing underneath), or as a substitute for posting more often. If your reels lose people in the first two seconds, likes won’t fix that.

The risks

The same as followers, in smaller measure. Instagram can remove likes from accounts it considers inauthentic, so a like count can fall back a little. Instagram also lets anyone hide like counts on their own feed, and creators can hide counts on their posts, so a like count isn’t always even visible. Our safety guide covers account risk in general.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is buying likes on Instagram worth it?
For a handful of important posts, it can be worth a few pounds. As an ongoing strategy, no: content people share and save does far more.
Is the list of likers visible?
Yes, those accounts show in the post’s likes list just as any others would.
Can I hide the like count on my posts?
Yes. You can switch off the like count on individual posts from the post’s menu, and anyone can hide counts across their own feed.
