Short answer

Compare the follower count with typical likes and comments, look for sudden jumps, scan the follower list for empty or spammy profiles, and read the comments. No single sign proves anything; several together usually do.

1. Engagement that doesn’t match the size

Add up likes and comments on the last ten posts, divide by ten, then divide by the follower count. That’s the engagement rate. What counts as normal varies by niche and size, and larger accounts tend to have lower rates, but very low numbers on a large account are a warning sign. Our engagement rate calculator does the sums.

2. Sudden jumps

Organic growth is lumpy but continuous. When thousands of followers show up overnight and no post went viral, a purchase is the likely explanation. Third-party analytics tools show follower history for public accounts, and you can sometimes spot it just by checking the count on a couple of different days.

3. The follower list itself

Open the followers list and scroll. Lots of accounts with no profile picture, no posts, random strings of letters and numbers in the username, or thousands of accounts followed but few followers of their own are typical of inauthentic accounts.

4. Comments that could be anywhere

“Nice pic 🔥”, “Great content!!”, emoji-only replies and comments that ignore what the post is actually about suggest automated or paid engagement. Real comments tend to reference something specific.

5. Audience location

If you’re working with a creator, ask for a screenshot of their audience insights. A UK coffee shop whose audience is mostly in countries it doesn’t serve has a mismatch worth asking about.

Checking your own account

If you’ve bought followers in the past, the same checks show how your profile looks to others. Individual followers can be removed from your list by hand. Instagram also periodically removes accounts it considers fake, so your count may fall on its own.

What this means if you buy

Anyone who looks closely can spot bought followers on an otherwise quiet account. That’s why we suggest modest packages, steady posting and keeping likes in line with followers, and why we don’t pretend our followers are something they’re not. More on that in our page on real followers.
