How the Instagram algorithm works in 2026

There isn’t one algorithm but several, one for each part of the app. Instagram has explained the broad strokes publicly; here’s a plain summary and what it means in practice.

Short answer

Instagram ranks content separately for Feed, Stories, Reels and Explore, predicting what each person is likely to engage with. Watch time, shares, saves, likes and comments all count, and Instagram has said shares matter a lot for reaching new people.

Several systems, not one

Instagram has described separate ranking for each surface. Feed mixes posts from accounts you follow with recommendations. Stories are mostly from people you interact with. Reels and Explore are largely recommendations from accounts you don’t follow yet, which is why they are where small accounts get discovered.

The signals Instagram has talked about

  • Your activity: what you like, share, save, comment on and watch.
  • The post: how quickly and how much people are engaging with it, and for video, how long they watch.
  • The account: how often you’ve interacted with that person in the past.
  • Shares, watch time and likes per reach: Instagram’s head has repeatedly singled these out, with shares (“sends”) especially important for reaching people who don’t follow you.

What that means for a small account

  1. Make things people send. Useful tips, local recommendations, relatable moments. A post someone forwards to a friend travels further than one they just like.
  2. Hook in the first seconds. For reels, people decide almost instantly whether to keep watching.
  3. Post original content. Instagram has said it favours original creators over accounts reposting others’ videos.
  4. Use the formats on purpose. Reels for reach, carousels for depth and saves, Stories for the people who already follow you. Our Reels vs carousels piece compares them.

Where bought numbers fit in

They don’t change how the algorithm ranks your content in any dependable way. A follower package changes what visitors see on your profile; a likes package changes what they see under a post. The ranking systems care much more about what real viewers do. That’s why we describe our packages as first-impression tools rather than growth hacks.

Checking your account is eligible

In Settings, Account Status shows whether any of your content goes against Instagram’s recommendation guidelines. If something is flagged, your posts may not be shown to non-followers until it’s resolved.
