How to grow a local Instagram account in the UK

A local account doesn’t need a national audience. It needs the few thousand people within reach to know it exists. Here’s how to get in front of them.

Why local is easier than it looks

You’re not competing with every account in the country, just with what people in your area see. And local content has something national content doesn’t: people forward it to friends who live nearby (“we should go here”). Shares are one of the signals Instagram has said matter most for reaching new people.

Make every post findable

  • Location tag on every post and reel: your venue if it exists on Instagram, otherwise your town.
  • Say the place in the caption: “the best flat white in Headingley” is searchable; “best flat white” isn’t local.
  • Put the area in your name field, which is searchable too.
  • Two or three local hashtags: #yorkfoodie or #walthamstowvillage beat #food. See hashtags in 2026.

Post what locals care about

Local news and events, what’s on this weekend, seasonal changes, faces people recognise, and genuinely useful tips (“parking near the market on Saturdays”). The more a post is about the place rather than just you, the more it gets shared.

Collaborate with neighbours

Collab posts appear on both accounts. Partner with businesses that share your customers but don’t compete: a gym and a smoothie bar, a florist and a venue, a barber and a menswear shop. Swap stories, run a joint giveaway, or film a short reel together.

Let customers do the talking

Make it easy to tag you: a sign at the till, a mirror people like taking photos in, a sticker on packaging. Reshare tagged stories (with thanks). Each one introduces you to that person’s local friends.

Use local creators carefully

A local food or lifestyle creator can reach precisely the people you want. If you give them anything in return for a post, it needs to be labelled as an ad. Our ASA guide covers this.

Small paid boosts

Promoting a post through Instagram with a tight radius around your location, for a few pounds a day, is one of the most direct ways to reach real local people. Try your best-performing reel first.

Starting from zero

A brand-new local profile with 12 followers can look abandoned even when the business is busy. Some owners use a small follower package to get past that while they build; if you do, keep it modest and keep posting. See 500 followers, our usual suggestion for a new local page.
